Identifying Personal Pronouns
  • A pronoun is a word that takes the place of one or more nouns. 
  • Pronouns can take the place of common and proper nouns.
  • One type of pronoun is a personal pronoun.
  • A personal pronoun identifies the speaker, the person spoken to, or the thing spoken about.

Pronoun chart

Bill and Kim watched the game.

We watched the game.

The three girls left.

You left. (The person spoken to)

Tyler hit the ball.

He hit the ball. (The person spoken about)


Practice A

Write the personal pronouns in each sentence.

The first one is done for you.

Identifying Antecedents

An antecedent is a word or group of words that a pronoun refers to or stands for.

Meg is fond of jigsaw puzzles. She bought a new puzzle today.

Antecedent: Meg                        Pronoun: She

Mary invited Brad and Pablo, but they can't come.

antecedent: Brad and Pablo    pronoun: they

The cat likes people to pet him.

antecedent: the cat     Pronoun: him


Practice

Write the personal pronoun and antecedent in each sentence. The first one is done for you.

1. Alex and Tracy asked Sharon to go with them.  Answer: them, Alex and Tracy

2. That book is interesting because it tells a true story.

3. Mrs. Rogers, will you be home tomorrow?

4. Ed was here, but he had to leave.

5. Bob called to Jan, but she did not hear.

6. Cal spoke to Li and Juan when they arrived.

7. Jorge explained why he was not at the game.

8. Morgan mailed the letters after she copied them.

9. Diane invited Kevin, but he did not reply.

10. The room was warm because it was so crowded.


Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement

A pronoun must agree with its antecedent. The antecedent and pronoun must be the same in number.

If the antecedent is singular, the pronoun must be singular. If the antecedent is plural, the pronoun must be plural.

1. Robin will wash the floor and wax it. (singular)

2. Grace and Jake know they will be late. (plural)

The Antecedent and pronoun must be the same in person. if the antecedent is masculine, the pronoun must be masculine. If the antecedent is feminine antecedent, the pronoun must be feminine.

Feminine Pronoun Example: She, Her

Masculine  Pronoun Example: He, him

3. Mr. Perez goes fishing whenever he can. (Masculine)

4. Sandra will help if she is not working. (Faminine)

Write each sentence. Add a personal pronoun of your own. Remember that a pronoun must agree with its antecedent.
