Identifying Antecedents
An antecedent is a word or group of words that a pronoun refers to or stands for.
Meg is fond of jigsaw puzzles. She bought a new puzzle today.
Antecedent: Meg Pronoun: She
Mary invited Brad and Pablo, but they can't come.

The cat likes people to pet him.

Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement
A pronoun must agree with its antecedent. The antecedent and pronoun must be the same in number.
If the antecedent is singular, the pronoun must be singular. If the antecedent is plural, the pronoun must be plural.
1. Robin will wash the floor and wax it. (singular)
2. Grace and Jake know they will be late. (plural)
The Antecedent and pronoun must be the same in person. if the antecedent is masculine, the pronoun must be masculine. If the antecedent is feminine antecedent, the pronoun must be feminine.
Feminine Pronoun Example: She, Her
Masculine Pronoun Example: He, him
3. Mr. Perez goes fishing whenever he can. (Masculine)
4. Sandra will help if she is not working. (Faminine)
